Thanks for setting the record straight, Nik. Ikigai is similar to Purushartha, the Hindu term for "objective of humankind." Purushartha has 4 elements:

1. Dharma — the order according to which the cosmos and everything in it functions.

2. Artha — the tools and resources that put us in a desired state (wealth, knowledge, network, etc.)

3. Kama — the pleasures of life—aesthetic, sensory, lust (with or without love).

4. Moksha — liberation.

Humans are not supposed to abstain from wealth or pleasure, but we must ensure that they are rooted in dharma. That way, our pursuit of pleasure is not immoral and pursuit of wealth is not uncontrolled. And eventually, we can outgrow them both—like a toddler outgrows a toy—to pursue liberation/freedom.
